Mystery Melon Awards
The GWG has a new category to announce for this year. Originally the mystery melon award was for 1 melon but with the added donations from our members, it has been expanded to 2 melons.
George Kopsell from Tennessee, Cliff Knight from Alabama and Mark Clementz from Michigan all donated $50 each. Bryan Mailey’s company from Udora, ON, Canada, donated money for 2 GWG memberships. We truly appreciate the generosity of these members.
This category is not for the heavy hitters (whoever you are). If you have a melon placing in the top 20 of the GWG, you will not qualify for the mystery melon.
1st Mystery Melon… $100 plus 2013 membership…. this will be a watermelon from 100 lbs to the first melon below the 20th place prize.
2nd Mystery Melon…. $50 plus 2013 membership…. this will be a watermelon from lowest weight to 99 lbs.
This way all our members have a chance to win a prize this year!!
The weights selected by the GWG board to win this category will not be released until after the GPC weigh offs are all over. That is what makes it mystery melons.
The winners will be the ones who have a watermelon closest to those selected weights without going over. Once again same rules apply… the melon must be weighed at a GPC sanctioned site, the member must have dues paid by June 1st 2012, and the watermelon must be undamaged and sound condition.
Good luck to all on this contest.
Plaques and Rosettes
For 2012, the GWG Club is adding two groups of awards to go with the cash prizes.
(1) The growers of the top three watermelons will receive plaques.
(2) The growers of watermelons taking fourth place through tenth place will receive rosettes.
These awards are limited to members of the GWG Club. The winning watermelons must be weighed in at GPC weigh offs.
Best of luck this year.Members must be in good standing by June 1st 2012 to be eligible. Watermelons must be weighed at GPC sanctioned weigh-off. If it looks like a watermelon and it is undamaged…. it counts!!
In an effort to promote our club and this hobby around the world, the GWG is awarding two new Regional Awards at the end of the season.
We have decided to create 3 separate regions, USA, Canada, and International, which includes any other country in the world.
The two new regional awards will be awarded to the top watermelon grower in the two regions that do not include the overall GWG winner. This will ensure that every year the top grower from each of the three regions will receive well deserved recognition.
The winners will receive a plaque and a cash award of $250. The GWG is donating the plaques and the cash awards are being donated by my own company, Dynamic Vibration.
So…. if the largest watermelon grown in 2012 this year is from say….Canada…then the awards would go to the grower with the largest melon in the USA, and the grower with the largest melon in any other country, such as Spain.
The grower from Canada would not be eligible for these awards. I know the more likely scenario would be a grower from the USA as the overall GWG winner, and the awards will go to someone in Canada and someone across the pond.. but one never knows!!
Rules for this award are the same as usual…
Members must be in good standing by June 1st 2012 to be eligible. Watermelons must be weighed at GPC sanctioned weigh-off. If it looks like a watermelon and it is undamaged…. it counts!!
